How To Make A Horror Movie

 In approach to making our 2 minute Horror movie opening, we have done some research about this genre.This video gives us tips on how to create a Horror movie, we are first introduced to The Title "How to make a horror" and the words Horror are in bold font Bright Red and looks as if the red is dripping blood connoting Danger,Death and gore connotations of a Horror film. The first instruction that is given into making  a Horror film is to "take the happy out of it" suggesting that we should make the surroundings and the setting of the film to seem grim and scary by giving it dim lighting to make it seem darker edit the brightness so it looks colder and adding in sinister sound effects to create a mysterious atmosphere.Then the second instruction is to have a main character the protagonist they are usually the survivors or the last ones to die, then have the main characters friends which are usually a mixture of a friend who is the most terrified and doesn't want to get involved then there is the other friend who is typically stubborn and doesn't believe in any supernatural things and therefore is  the least scared. The third instruction is  to give the characters reason to get involved with the situation or to enter a place the Horror movie is based around e.g A Haunted house. Another typical character to involve is usually a person with experience with the situation they are dealing with this is usually the person that warns them and is the person the characters run to for help or for explanation. The next step is to include the background music and sound effects to make the audience feel tense and frightened themselves and helps emphasize the sudden pop ups. Then create fear by making abnormal things happen in the scenes such as objects moving by themselves seeing "unreal beings such as ghosts also making the main characters friends disappear or having the supernatural/villain kill them off , adds to the tension as it leaves the main character alone and vulnerable therefore more frightened suggesting to the audience that something may happen to the main character. Next giving reason for the main character to run away makes the audience tense as we are hoping that the main character will manage to outrun the supernatural beings . It leaves the audience on the edge of their seats and shows us how desperate the main character is to get away from the danger. The ending of the horror movie is as it typically ends with a cliff hanger has the main character really succeed or will they still be haunted.

The Making of "The Woman in Black"

The Woman in Black - Opening Scene - Daniel Radcliffe Movie (2012) HD

 

In this opening scene of women in black we are first introduced to a close up shot of children playing with tea cups alongside nondiegetic sound which is  eerie slow music played in the background giving this scene a sinister mood. The camera then cuts to a long shot of the three little girls sitting around playing in this shot we are able to see what costume they are wearing which is old fashioned long dresses and by the looks of their toys being china dolls and old fashioned prams this tells the audience that this story is set in a different era long time ago. The use of the white dresses the girls are wearing connotes innocence and portrays them as the victims in this story. The next significant shot is a close up shot of the girls' facial expressions they are smiling at each other and the duration of this shot is dragged out making their actions seem slow, this causes tension and makes the audience anxious. The camera then cuts to a long shot still following the 180 rule and the camera films them form one side of the room, and at this moment the girls heads turn towards the direction of the camera as if they are looking right at the audience , they facial expressions change to serious and they stare intently at something the audience cant see, this makes the audience curious and connotes mystery. The Three girls then turn their heads in synchrony to look at the window which is made up of three squares. The camera then zooms in to the shot of the window as the music becomes louder highlighting the window as something dangerous. The girls then stand up together still looking at the window, as they stand up the camera cuts to an extreme close up  of one of the girls hands dropping  the tea cup to the floor the camera cuts to a shot of her feet as the tea cup falls and smashes next to her feet. This is an effective shot as it shows the audience that they are so focused on this window that everything is else is oblivious to them. The camera continues filming their feet as they walk towards the window we see the tea cups break under their feet as they walk over them  hinting to the audience that the girls are in some sort of trance and are unaware of what they are doing. The camera then switches to a medium shot on the other side of the window so we see the three girls walking up to window and their facial expressions are blank as if in a trance. The camera cuts back to a long shot filming them from the back as they step on to the balcony and open the doors in the window. this creates tension for the audience as it suggests they might jump out of the window. The girls then jump out of the window together as the music suddenly hits a high note emphasising the moment. this moment is then quickly followed by a nondiegetic sound of a painful scream in a women's voice and the dialogue  "my babies" the camera then cuts to an extreme close up of one of the china dolls face which shows contrast of the horrific scene having an object like a dolly which usually connotes innocence and fun. The scene then ends with an over the shoulde shot of a figure in a black veils standing in the corner of the room. The use of the black veil connotes mystery as we can not identify who this is and the colour black connotes danger and fear making this being an object of fear to the audience,the scene then is faded out.

It Follows (2014) - opening scene

In the beginning of this scene we are introduced with a slow paced establishing shot of the setting which is a middle class neighbourhood road, in the Autumn, the camera then stops and focuses on one house in particular we then see a young lady come running out of the front door, She looks frightened this makes the audience curious to know what she is running from, The camera than zooms in closer to her and there is a tracking shot used to keep us with her running. Mise en scene in this scene is interesting as the girl is wearing high heels and a white vest and shorts. This is an odd costume for her to be wearing as we can see in this scene that it is autumn , as the leaves of trees have fallen of and its cloudy and not at all sunny. This suggests that the girl is so desperate to run out of the house that she didn't care about feeling cold in what she's wearing as it is ironic that she is sprinting in  heels. The girl then stops at the middle of the road in a long shot so that we can see her full body and the setting behind her. This shot is close enough for us to see her facial expression which is one of fear as she looks from side to side as if she is paranoid. This suggests that there is someone or something after her  that only she can see. then there is some diegetic  sound of her panting, this is a very typical sound in horror movies as panting and gasps show us how anxious the character is feeling and makes it personal to them this connotes fear and adrenalin. There is then dialogue followed by her dad asking if she is okay and she says "I'm fine dad" this is ironic as we can clearly see she is not acting normal so her dialogue connotes mystery and suggests she is hiding the problem from her dad. The girl then starts running again and the camera follows her running in a circular motion emphasising how disoriented she is. There is then nondiegetic sound being played as background music , the music is slow and has loud thumping sounds that makes it sound creepy causing tension in this scene. The girl runs in the house then comes running back out and when she comes running out the music changes to a fast paced rhythm which connotes adrenalin and accelerates the scene.The girl rushes into the car and drives off in along shot allowing the audience to see the surroundings. The camera then cuts to a shot inside the vehicle filming the character from the back as if the audience is sitting in the back seat of the car.This is effective as it makes the scene more personal and causes fear for the audience as we feel as if we are in the moment with her.Supposedly her mobile then rings and the girl quickly looks back in this shot while still stirring.
